There are good hybrids available from many small companies that are as good or better then Pioneer or Dekalb and much cheaper. Do your homework. Bigger is not always better. Higher cost is not always better but some people love to pay more thinking they are getting the best just because. Run some numbers of seed cost per acre and net return per acre versus gross return per acre. Not to mention pioneer's problem with plant health and standability. With these low commodity prices another look at expenses is warranted for those of us who did not have a good crop year due to drought.

We need to buy from a seller who can provide a package of strong hybrids to plant any given year to hedge our bets. This can be harder for small companies to do. Part of the high cost is many of the latest genetics seems to be available in multiple traited more expensive hybrids. If you give up overall yield across your farm because of the potential savings of seed cost those savings can disappear fast.
