i have a feeling Joshua may be right have you ever dug a root pit? without a level of resistance corn can grow some amazingly long roots looking for moisture and happening across nutrients plus if you have a clay substrate that would be dense enough to hold large amounts of nutrients 5 to 8 foot or more root length is not impossible
