| vailcat, I give the explanation of some calculations you could perform.
Cation ppm / Cation ppm/meq/100 gr soil = Cation meq/100 gr soil
100 * Cation meq/100 gr soil / CEC = %Cation BS
Values to be used as Cation ppm/meq/100 gr soil for:
Ca = 200.4
K = 391
Mg = 121.6
Na = 230
H = 10.08
For any other is:
Cation ppm/meq/100 gr soil = 10 * Atomic Weight / Oxidation number
Oxidation number = number of electrical charges
Ca2+ = 2
K+ = 1
Mg2+ = 2
Na+ = 1
H+ = 1
And Atomic Weight you can find it in any chemical table.
Plowboy if you don’t mind I explain to vailcat about calculation you have mentioned.
vailcat, using the same previous formulas, you said “I have Ca = 4631 ppm and the %Ca BS = 75.1”, so:
Ca meq/100 gr soil = Ca ppm / 200.4 = 4631 / 200.4 = 23.11
%Ca BS = 100 * Ca meq/100 gr soil / CEC = 75.1
Rearranging we get:
100 * Ca meq/100 gr soil / 75.1 = CEC = 100 * 23.11 / 75.1 = 30.8
I hope this could help you.
