You completely ignore the purpose of the 2nd amendment.  It has absolutely nothing to do with hunting, or with target shooting, or with anything you seem to think should be okay.  It has to do with defense.  Defense against criminals, and defense against an out of control government.  There is no rational reason to think that a 'well armed militia' should be carrying single shot rifles and muzzle loading pistols.  How can you possibly consider that a "well armed militia?"   A "well armed militia" will at the very least have modern, militarily viable rifles and side arms.  I would think that in the current world, that would certainly imply magazine fed selective fire rifles, preferably with support by belt fed weapons, but apprently you think differently?   I can't believe an engineer can rationally draw that conclusion.  

We do not allow "mass carnage weapons" to be sold to "just about anyone."   From what I have read, it appears obvious that the psychopath who did this was ineligible to own any firearm.  At any rate, we have made schools "safe" by completely prohibiting any firearms, and it obviously did no good.   The evidence is clear that banning guns will not cure psychopaths.
