| As you can see everybody has their own opinion of VT. We have had a McFarlane reel disc for 2 years now. We demoed it in the spring of 2011 and wanted to check emergence and see if we had any stand reduction from incorporating residue in two inches into the soil. We saw no problems, and liked what we saw. We are pretty anal with the corn planter, but it has worked well for us the last 2 years.
The things we liked better about the McFarlane was the fact that we can change settings.
Ex) For fall we set the discs on # 4 to be more agressive and mix more stalks and dirt.
In the spring, it kind of depends on the soil type, crop rotation, how much stalk is left from last year etc... We do use it in the fall and the spring. It's pretty common for us to change settings a couple times a week, depending on how much we are using it. We felt it gave us better flexibility than other manufacturers tools did. We also use ours as a finisher after we have ripped soil. The McFarlane will carry enough soil with it to smooth out after our ripper. Service requirements are reasonable. Have met with the district salesman a couple times, they have been good to work with.
