Northeast Iowa | Hey Garvo, I always appreciate you encouragement for the small guy for turning a little pasture into a small herd. I have some small pastures, it seems like thats all that is available here right now. One I run some old cows on and turn the bull in May 1st and pulled June 15th. What ever gets bred gets bred, Then the bull goes to my big pasture with my younger cows. then they get mouthed and preg checked in the fall. I am picking up 2 more tiny pastures next summer that I am going to start a small fall calving herd. Then I can keep my bull busy. I have 14 head right now spring calvers. And probably looking at 10 fall calvers starting next summer. I guess I am just trying to load the gun so to speak incase a bigger pasture comes around in the near future so that I don't have such a large one time expense and will be ready when the time comes to expand. Of course I work off farm and enjoy having cattle around. Also my calf crop gets sold today so that pumps me up a little bit. | |
