N.W. Illinois | The screens get dirty on the outside starting at the top and working down. It's mostly bees wings and other bits and pieces the dryer expels through the screens as the corn moves down through the column. Variety of corn makes a difference. The inside of the dryer stays pretty clean usually. Superb had a fines vent at the back of the dryers which allows the fines to go into the unload. We have plugged dryer columns with bees wings bunched going into the unload even with Superb conveyor unload system. We were filling the dryer and running the fan at the same time. The dryer overheats the exhaust temp and the dryer shuts down with a warning. After fi;;ing always observe corn movement in each column.
Dirty screens really slow up capacity. Superb is trying to come out with a screenless dryer. There are screenless or duct driers manufactured but they are taller and harder to work into some systems because of their height.
If you are going to dump hot make sure you have enough vents or a roof fan on your cooling bin. Venting at the top of the bin is very important especially when it is cold out. If you move the corn from one bin to another you will not have issues with the corn.
With steeping you have to be careful that the top layer of corn does not become like a big wet blanket over the rest of the corn especially in the middle of the bin.
When ever I've dumped hot I have always started cooling as soon as the floor is covered. It makes me to nervous trying to steep it and I have enough dryer capacity that I do not need the added dryer capacity.
The centrifugal fans with 10 hp motors or bigger on dryers and bins can be hard to start for 3 phase converters. The fans start up is to long and will kick the breaker. Make sure your electrician uses the proper breakers or it will make for a long Fall. Axial fans start much easier but of course are loud and obnoxious. | |
