It's not a personal deal. You can still like him and he can still like you if he so chooses. Sometimes unpleasant things just have to be done. I'd just tell him that it can't be the way it has been in the past and that you just can't afford to let your stuff leave your place. Maybe offer to let him borrow something if it doesn't leave your place? I have some friends that can borrow anything equipment or tool I have, and honestly I wouldn't even be mad if they tore it up. They've done too much for me, or they take really good care of stuff. I have some that can't borrow anything no matter what.

The biggest thing we have that people want to borrow is our manlift. I don't loan it anymore because of the times it's come back with stuff broken that we had to order parts and fix. It stays out of sight now and if asked about it.....won't work and don't know when we'll be fixing it. People who borrow rarely can fix.
