A very good older friend of mine was telling me once of a neighbor he had that always wanted to borrow his uni-harvester. Every year he would want to borrow it to pick 40 acres of corn or so, and always expected my friend to maintain it. Finally, one year, he'd had enough and was trying to think of a nice way to tell the gentleman that he wouldn't loan it out any longer. The guy stopped and my friend told him that it wouldn't start and didn't know when he'd have time to fix it. The neighbor stopped by a few more times over the next few years to borrow it, but it was always the same story, it wouldn't start. The day my friend was telling me the story he said, with a slight grin, "ya know, I never have but the batteries back in it since!". But, I guess it maintained the relationship but made the borrowing stop.
