Coldwater, Michigan | Jeff,
You, like many of us in the premium fertilizer business have stated a common error that is repeated way too many times for "educated individuals". That error? That Chloride converts to Chlorine. No such reaction occurs. They are 2 different compounds! However, when one wants to sell their premium product, stating that potash converts to chlorine gas and thus sterilizes the soil, killing bacteria, and all soil life, then it leaves the door open to selling a more expensive product that doesn't do the soil harm.
Why not state that like all salts, too much can be a bad thing, therefore managing it properly will give excellent results. And if done properly there are some good products out there that can enhance most fertility programs with proper management.
I have heard your story of Chloride turning to Chlorine in many places including a former company I worked with, so don't feel I am just picking on you. Your post just exposed itself one more time, so I thought I would clue you in before you unknowingly spread this story any further. It really isn't any different than the standard fertilizer people who can't seem to understand there is a difference between Magnesium & Manganese (Mg vs Mn). While they sound similar, the effect on a crop is markedly different.
Have a good day!
