+1 I also have lived by a river my whole life.
Rivers never stay put. They constantly change their path and cut away at the banks any time the water is high.
I also have lived by a river my whole life. I don't think we lost much bottom ground to heavy rains, except right along the river where there weren't trees. I always thought we cleaned out the channel and dropped in on the farmland when the river got out. We were filling the terraces and drainage ditches off the hills all the time. We had grass above the terraces
