It is best to sit down and talk with a couple of different electricians as to what you
really need for now and in the future. Don't listen to the guy that says you can do
it on the cheap, with.
My story. When I was young and ???, I built a farrowing barn. The electrician says all
I needs was 5KW for fans and furnace. also you didn't need a transfer switch as
a reverse plug into welder plug was just fine. It worked and may have used it two or
three times over a couple of years. Then came the half day outage on a 90 degree
day. I found out it wouldn't run all the fans and ever a couple when the water pump
started would kick out the generate. It wasn't fun sitting at the breaker panel
for 12 hours.
Within a week I had a 50KVA generator on the way and power company had installed
a transfer switch. Within another week I had a frame and Chrysler industrial
connect and running. Since the end of the hog operation I switch the motor to
a 354 Perkins, as I couldn't keep the carburetor clear when it wasn't getting
it weekly starts.
I did my our because the only option for 25 KVA or more was PTO or very large
self-contained units. there just happened to be a 50KVA sitting in a warehouse
somewhere.
