Subject: RE: generac standby generator?

Dallas Center IA 515-720-2463
Got myself a generator a couple years ago.
Plan was to just run a good size drop cord into the house, maybe two cords. Then plug in a couple lights, the corn stove, chargers for flashlights and other, and last the putor. Just enough to may life a bit better.

Then I was down to Northern and looked at Transfer Switches. Not near as much money as I figured.

So I go see my electric guy.

He does not like the in the house, just part of your system switches.
And a 100 amp would be way more than I need.
But a 200 amp costs less than a 100 amp. For some reason.

So I have a 200 amp transfer switch that will power the entire farmstead. Including the bins.
Way more than my generator would handle.

Not sure of the KW, but it has a 13 hp engine.

Nothing automatic or fancy.

Test time: Stated up the generator in the shed. Wheeled it to the pole.
Hooked up the plug. Started the generator. Flipped the switch.

Lights on in the house, I turned up the heat to keep it running.
Then let the water run out on the ground. Figured the engine would pull down when the pump kicked on.

Ran it like that for over 20 minutes. No problems.

Maybe if I had a electric water heater and turned on the AC it would not run it all.

Happy with the less than $1000- generator and the $1,650- switch.
Best part is I have not had to use them.

And I did buy a second smaller hand start generator. If the big one will not start or the battery is dead. I will use the little one to charge the big one's battery.
Or if I can't get the big one going, back to the drop cord idea.
Little one will not plug into the transfer switch.

And the little one starts on the first or second pull.
The big one does not start on the first turn of the key.
