Somerville, Indiana | 83 was hot and dry here, 1100 acres of corn made 29,000 bu. The way it looked we were happy with that...The sandy bottoms south of John's around Grayville showed the drouth quicker, in 2 weeks it looked the same here...We had all corn that year, it all wilted, small crooked cob...88 was just as dry but wasn't as hot, and had a 70 bu crop...The most I can remember about the T3? corn gene was 3369A and the early 70s, we had a lot of that planted and raised a crop, just hard to pick it up...Some very good varieties yielded 7 bpa, and several folks remember that well...I hauled a lot of water to hogs too, was so glad to see the plastic water line go in with a subsoiler.
The early 80s finished installing RWA on combines here, after 10 years of trying to make do with rice tires on the front and rear-the rear tires were narrow like an early Ford tractor front tire, it went to solid ground, made a narrow slot, and didn't pull hard...The M and W fat fronts with the cast iron wheel was tried at first but didn't go over very well=too wide, cut a wide gash, pulled hard but the back of the Gleaner G stayed on the ground much better when backing out.
The 90s showed how well rain soaked in ground that was no tilled, more so at harvest time we could go back harvesting a full day after the rain quit.
