There was a southern corn leaf blight (I think) that hit in the early 70's here. It was caused or amplified by the sterile male you speak of. Dad recalls that well and it was a very poor corn year in these parts. There must have been a similar event in the 80's as I don't think there were any large (50%) setasides in the early 70's.
