North of London | Think it was 77 that we gave up on harvesting beans and flew wheat on to the fields to get some winter wheat planted.
Pulling by hand and thrashing later would have been a monumental job to get a small amount off.
Had an aunt and uncle who grew a large white bean that was a late maturing variety in their garden and they did that each year and hung the plants up in a small barn to dry.
Kept some for seed and ate the rest.
Made nice tasting beans but not many of us would have the time and patience to do that.
We did not benefit from the high price in '77 because our marketing board had some pre booked and so what we harvested did not bring many $$ since most people did not harvest anything. We were too ambitious and got about 1/3 harvested and got our insurance guaranteed weight from that. Excellent yield but not many got to the bin. | |
