New Mexico
seems to be in the continual mode of testing em the hard way.

Over time, looks to me like she's done thee best job too, bar none.

The genetics are decent everywhere ( including Mexico etc ) and in every breed too.
( been some pretty plain look Mex steers go to good high country weighing 500, come out weighing 1,100 in the fall, galloping elephants with floppy ears, just makes one smile )

It's all about real groceries. MO.

See plenty of dryed out hard raised 750 to 850 lb thinner young cows come by with NICE 55 to 75 lb fresh calves.
Feed em half way decent for 6 months and she weighs 1,100 to 1,150 and raises a 600 to 650 wt calf vs 400 to 5 wt.

And if the afore is in better ( diet of 2 rocks instead of 3 ) going she weighs 950 to 1,100 comes by with a 65 to 85 lb fresh calf.

Calves here seem to be bunk broke so to speak at a week old.
Anything that is not a rock, they'll probably eat some w ma as long as they can reach it.
