One way to build soil and tilth in corn belt (and maybe Maryland) conditions and climate is to plant continuous corn and leave most of the residue on the surface. Strip till is one way to do this. Corn produces tremendous amount of residue both above and below the soil surface. IF it is incorporated it largely "burns up" by quick microbial activity. Rotating into bean stubble makes life easier but beans leave very little residue. Continuous corn, no tilled if/where possible but certainly strip tilled withthe stubble contained between the rows where it was grown, makes a tremendous difference in soil tilth and OM. I have seen it happen. Nature built the deep high OM soils of the corn belt by piling century after century of residue on top, not turning it under and not annually rotating crops. My .02.
