Ladoga, IN, United States, North America, Earth | The problem with with an open file format is that it cannot usually keep up with the speed that things progress these days. With a .shp file you are really reading 3 files and converging the data. That takes time and processing. Where as these other data formats are inclusive.
There is no standard for file format. I can't take a program written for windows and run on a Mac without some conversion. I can't just load an .xls into Numbers without it first supporting it. Sure it would be nice to have an open file format, but by the time you got it done and then had to add new stuff to its file structure to support new stuff down the line you will have broken it for older software.
It's like ISO 11783. It is by far not the best way to run equipment. It is slow and laggy. I can sure as heck do a lot more with the same equipment without using the ISO 11783 standard.
Also, when you just multiple post like that, nobody can tell who you are talking to or what you are replying to.
It is a perfect world thought, and we are no where near perfect for that. |
