35 years ago I twisted wrenches for a living. We also built exhaust systems, with a pipe bender and all. I got pretty good at it. We just had regular mild steel wire for the wire feed welder. We did use the argon/co2 mixed gas. We welded new mufflers, cats, and steel pipes on old or new pipe. I felt like quite the artist after doing that stuff for 5 years.
