7-10 bushel/thousand population is a pretty good range to be in.
If you're achieving less than 7 bushels/thousand, you could probably back off on population without hurting yield. If you're achieving more than 10 bu/thousand it would probably be wise to increase population.
The above used in conjunction with prescription variable rate planting and yield maps has been a real game changer on farms that are really variable in soil types and yield potential. Put the seed on the ground where it has a chance to produce something.
