humblefarmer - 5/10/2025 06:20 Is 10 bu per thousand plants a good goal? Meaning if you are consistently achieving 9-10 bushels per thousand it might be time to increase population?

7-10 bushel/thousand population is a pretty good range to be in.

If you're achieving less than 7 bushels/thousand, you could probably back off on population without hurting yield.   If you're achieving more than 10 bu/thousand it would probably be wise to increase population.

The above used in conjunction with prescription variable rate planting and yield maps has been a real game changer on farms that are really variable in soil types and yield potential.   Put the seed on the ground where it has a chance to produce something.
