Subject: RE: cost to keep a cow

On the Delmarva
Despite the fact that the wife insists the cattle end is only a hobby, I do try to manage it as I would any other aspect of my farm's operation, it has to be profitable for me to do it. While the current herd is much smaller than the one I had in high school (8 cows vs 45 cows) I use pretty much the same principles as I did back then. Either she produces a live calf, and raises it to weaning or she becomes hamburger. Something has to pay for the bills, whether it's feed, fencing, fuel or even my own time. I can't even recall all the conversations that Dad and I would have over why I wanted a particular cow gone. His belief was keep her around because you might (keyword: might) get something decent, my belief she has already had money poured into her, no more on a maybe.
