| Our just under 8 year old Maytag stainless steel French door refrigerator quit cooling. Service guy determined it was a weak compressor but was not equipped to check refrigerant. Said we'd have $500-$800 in fixing a leak and recharging or replacing the compressor. His reasoning was that modern refrigerators only last 8-10 years. He said the front control panel was nla if it would go up and that there was another troublesome expensive circuit board in the back. A similar replacement refrigerator is around $2500 and might be here by June if we order it soon. This is a 33" wide unit to fit the available space. Not the end of the world as I can clean up the shop refrigerator for temporary household use. I hate to throw out a $2500 machine after only 8 years. Do we try to fix it or do we replace it. I'd pay more if there is a brand that might last longer. | |
