Tomball,Texas | That last seven days will be remembered around here for a long time.
Everyone knows that we had a cold spell here in Texas this past week well here’s a rundown on my week.Last Sunday I did a job with my spreader trucks that was a first for me,I mixed course sand with salt and spread it all over the employee parking and truck traffic areas of a large receiving warehouse and distribution center on the north side of Houston,that afternoon the freezing rain started and temperature went to falling.
4:00 Monday morning the electricity goes off,I have a 75KW 3 phase pto generator hooked up to the tractor ready to go,I even test ran it Saturday and checked the voltage with a volt meter,well I plug it in to the dairy barn and engage the pto and nearly stall the tractor,turns out the gearbox had a lot of condensation in it and at 15° it was frozen.I put a propane heater on it with a piece of metal over it and had it thawed out pretty quick and drained the water and oil out and changed it.
The electricity stayed off a couple days and then was on and off every few hours.I moved the generator from the dairy barn to the Feedmill between milkings and we bagged feed for my feed business which was extra busy due to weather.
Everything takes longer in 10° weather with ice and snow all over the place but we managed to get the cows milked and everything fed and my feed customers taken care of.
We got word mid week that the bottling plant in Houston was closed down with no water and natural gas problems and wouldn’t be receiving any milk so after Thursday mornings milking I opened the valve and dumped 2400 gallons of pretty hard earned milk down the drain.
Monday through Thursday the coldest it got here that I saw was 10° with ice and snow and it was below freezing for 3 days and in the teens each day,it was the coldest and most ice I’ve ever been in,I was probably a little better prepared than most,I drained all the water and blew air through the water lines Sunday and I had plenty of firewood in the house.
But then Friday got here,my daughter’s wedding day.
The sun came back and it warmed up into the 40’s,the wife and daughter have been planning the wedding for several months and the weather had them pretty nerved up but everything went smooth and we all had a great time.
What a week it was.

It was a very emotional day obviously for all of us with the wedding,my daughter is the only girl out 12 grandchildren in my immediate family,my father passed away recently and he and my daughter were very close,I was wearing one of his ties with suit I had on,we could really feel his presence there with us.
I don’t own a suit and very rarely wear nice clothes,I caught a lot of ribbing from some of buddies about the suit but I didn’t mind at all.
Every father should have the relationship that I have with my daughter,I don’t think I’ve ever been happier for anyone than than I was for her that evening.
