OK | I am trying to find references/resources to determine whether I can buy land, how much I can buy, and how many cows I need to run to generate a reasonable income. The question is whether or not it can be justified financially making a land and cattle purchase to achieve an economy of scale that will generate a liveable income? Does anyone have info on unit costs to consider when purchasing land to run cattle. For ex: one ranch is 8000 acres @ $435 an acre - carrying capacity is 20 acres per cow/calf so unit cost is $8700. Second ranch is 1022 acres @ $1350 an acre, carrying capacity 1/7 acres = $9450 unit cost. One ranch will run about 400 cows, the other 150. Can either pay for itself??? As best I can tell, it is a losing proposition unless you are counting on land appreciation over time to make it "pencil out". Thoughts? | |
