Subject: What causes corn to tiller?

NW illinois
Have some indian corn in the garden and it is tillering really bad. Could it be tillering a lot because the plants are competing for sunlight and they are trying to get more leaves out there or what? I planted it by hand, but I would guess the pop. is somewhere around 35-40000 plants per acre on 30 in rows. Will cutting off the tillers help it to produce larger ears by putting more nutrients into the main stalk? Questions/comments welcome. thanks
