Southeast Colorado | Last week we pulled an air seeder home from a little south of Lubbock up to southeast Colorado. We must have literally passed by millions of basically ZERO production acres. The thing I notice the most in these cotton producing areas is how residue free the soil is. Most of it has deep beds or furrows in it also. Since I know not everyone in that area is stupid (and I know nothing about cotton) could someone please explain to me why no till or strip till wouldn't work better than maximum tillage?? I know this area is always prone to being dry so its hard to imagine that leaving most of your residue wouldn't help with conserving moisture. Does cotton have too many disease issues that it can't handle any residue around it? I know this year is much dryer than most but even in the better years I see the soil prepped the same way. | |
