Subject: RE: bale storage

Grabill, Indiana
Here are basic storage losses typically observed in round bales in different storage facilities:

Outside Ground 9.5 13
Outside Crushed Rock Pad 8 10
Outside Pad w Pallets 7.5 8.5
Outside Pad & Tarp 4 5
Outside Pad w Pallets & Tarp 3 4
Inside Building 2 2

First column is 6 months, second column is 12 months storage.

If you have 40 acres of hay with a yield of 5 tons, you have 200 tons of hay harvested per year. The difference between inside storage and outside on ground is 7.5 percentage points. If they hay you produce is worth $80/ton, stiring hay inside netted you $1200 more income. This assumes you receive the same price for both types of hay which is highly unlikely.

When you start comparing the price differential between hay stored outside versus inside, coupled with the differences in storage losses you can quickly justify an "inside" storage facility.
