For horse owners it is very important to keep hay dry as any rot and mold on the hay will give them serious intestinal issues that can lead to death. From a dairy or beef persective I would think that by keeping the bales out of the elements it would help them prevent mold and rot which decreases the nutritional value of the hay feed.
