Subject: RE: Picking corn by hand......

Near Intersection of I-35 & I-90 Southern Mn.
I guess my Dad was pretty good at it. I think he even won a couple of local contests. I don't remember the load before noon part. I do remember that he said they got paid to harvest the load and $ .01 per bushel to unload it. He said they would pick until it got too dark to see and then come up and unload into the crib in the real darkness.

Dad also told stories of how he and a friend (later became Brothers-in-law) built fence along the railroad tracks in South Dakota. They had a Model T with special wheels that would fit the tracks. It pulled a small trailer that held their tools. The railroad had stockpiled supplies such as posts, wire etc. along the tracks. They would lift the car and trailer off the tracks if a train was scheduled to be in the area where they were working. They often slept in a tent they pitched along side the tracks. Sometimes they would drive to the next town if it was close to buy groceries and maybe spend a night in town once in a while.
