I did it 40 years ago, took it down to the studs and then added 24x26 family room, office and bath. Foundation was/is very good, still have an old house with an addition, spent as much as a total new house, don't know where the $ went and I did a lot of the work. Quality wise the old house will probably outlast the addition. Put a new steel/shingle look a like roof and painted it this year so it will outlast us now.
Question for those who have remodeled or added additions to old farmhouses.
