I posted this below as it fit both places
I am one of the young farmers that had a chance to farm on own by a non family business man in 1964. Had a A JD AC roto baler a few cows He bought 400 acres and later bought another 240 I bought 160.
Left there in 1970 with 4020 3010 A 30-40 cows other mach and bought another 120.
About 1990 2 youngest children came back to farm and worked for me and the each had some cows 1 from MU other from Voc Tech
I sold them enough cows so they had 1/3 interest. The 2 older children had off farm jobs
About 2000 I had shoulder problems and on disability so Leased Mach and land 1/3-2/3 sold another 1/3 cattle
About 2005 they quit leasing machinery
About 2010 I sold them the last 1/3 of cattle sold any joint machinery and they started paying Grass rent
The farming children have own land and farmsteads.
Wife and I have 1700 acres in trust that the the farming children have a option of buying the non farming out on our deaths
Our trustee is non family but can be changed by the children
