Basic Training Infiltration Course

There is some optical illusion on the infiltration course.
When you begin the course you are in a trench at the far end. Dirt is sloped up from the trench.
As you look up the tracer rounds seem to just barely clearing the top of the rise. Just looks like there is not enough clearance for you to craw under.

Then when you get to the finish end of the course and look down range, it appears the rounds are way up in the air.

When I did it 1963 the machine guns were the water cooled .30 type. Water cooled can fire a high rate of fire over a long period without overheating.

The people firing the machine guns would swing them side to side. But there was a metal deal to prevent them from being lowered.

I would never stand up, no way. The course was not that hard to do by crawling.
Also pretty sure if the machine gun operators saw somebody standing up, they would not fire in that direction.

It was not near as hard as I feared. Really I think the obstacle course was far harder. But then I am far from a All State football player. Only sports I was ever any good at are bowling and pool. And far from real good at them.
