Beresford, SD
Don't plant any more than you personally can feed in a year. Running right at 200 acres now, sell first cut In the windrow and keep the rest. Have 120 acres getting thin (old stands). With price of row crops, I haven't decided if I'm going to burn it down this fall or roll with it and be satisfied with reduced alfalfa production but zero input costs for next year other than fert. Alfalfa normally brings the most value per acre to my feed yard. Presently it's a lot cheaper to raise protein than it is to be at the mercy of the by-product feed market. Biggest draw back, Alfalfa can consume a lot of time in the summer. Alfalfa will always be a crop in my rotation.
