For me on my sands, it is all about rain and when I get it. Plant a 3.4 Memorial Day and get good rains tail end of August and early September with some heat and sun??? Awesome beans.
Plant a 2.6 in late April and get good rains at the end of July??? Amazing how much they can withstand during August and fill pods well.
Water, water, water, and the timing of the aforementioned water. Nothing else matters on my dryland sand. So to answer your root question...you tell me when I'm going to get the rains from July 20 thru September 20, and I'll tell you what maturity to plant in April or May. And if I could do that...I'd buy an island and retire. :-)

Same thing for Missouri, water, water, water! We plant 3.6 up to 4.2 here. Used to plant as short as 3.3. The 3.7/3.8 seems to be the sweet spot. Last several years seemed to always get a Labor Day rain, didn't happen this year so I bet the shorter season beans will be better if no more rain in the next two weeks. |
