If I've learned anything, beans are so finicky at the end that maturity only matters on the year's characteristics. I've had 09-1.9 beans all yield close, jockeying for high yielder every year. Last year, they all went mid 70s to mid 80s, mid 1's did the best then. Just plant what fits your planting window with a decent spread of maturities, you'll avg well.
Year has to be perfect to get anything extra out of a 1.4-1.7 that I can't get out of an 09. Usually end up waiting for a freeze for a 1.7 only to have it yield the same as a shorter day bean. Obviously that's a here thing, but it's just not a long enough season to gain anything out of a longer day 90% of the time.
09's went mid to upper 60's last year, so why bother with trying to chew through some tough longer day beans for the same yield. Haven't had 1.7's for a couple years, all 09-1.4 now with most on the shorter side. |
