Think there are a few differences since the dry years in the 80's for us in western Canada. Getting rid of cultivation for the most part has saved us inches of soil moisture that saved our crop this year. We had 4" of rain during the growing season. Which I'm sure is more than the very dry portions of western Canada and northern plains in the US. Mostly in 2-3 tenth rains which do very little. Had 2 rains over 6/10's. But very timely. And a ground profile completely full of moisture from last year. 2018 is where the fireworks will be IMO if we don't get much rain or snow.
Our crop was 50% above our 10 yr average. And I'm hearing that all over MB.
