| My heritage goes back as far as Switzerland in the 1500s. (Anabaptist Revolution) My ancestors left there for Germany for religious freedom. Spent about a 100 years in Germany and then moved to Russia, Ukraine. Another 100 years there. In the spring of 1874 approximately 60 families left Russia again for religious freedom. They sailed on the City of Richmond to New York. Took a train to Peabody, Ks. Several men in the group took another train to Halstead, Ks, and from there they walked approximately fifteen miles north to the area where I now live. (See my map dot) to scout this land. They liked what they saw and went back to Peabody to bring their families here, arriving in late September. They actually got some of the Turkey Red Winter Wheat they brought with them from Russia planted that first fall. Most of the families lived in a common house that first winter that was built for them by the Santa Fe Railroad. | |
