My parents bought set of Compton Encyclopedias in 1953 from 3rd grade teacher that sold them on the side. Price was in mid $300 range iirc. Big chunk of the family budget back then. But my brothers and I gained a lot of info from them during our school years. My Dad ordered a 1 book update every year until his passing. I still have the complete set.
