West Lafayette IN | Carter put a grain embargo on Russia in January of 1980. Regan ended the embargo when he took office in 1981 however, then grain prices in the United States had dropped well below the cost of production while Russia purchased grain from other countries. It took years for the prices to recover and many farmers and equipment dealers had already succumbed to the recession. At least that was the story in our neighborhood. It's still a sore subject for many. | |
