You don't get hail? Here an asphalt shingle roof In decent condition will take most hail storms but a metal roof will get dinged up and "require" replacement.

Here, there are more shingled roofs replaced due to hail damage than steel.

A hailstone strike on a shingle compresses the shingle in a small area, creating a "bruise". The protective stones at this bruise are loosened from the substrate and much of it sheds off, making the stone covering thinner.

Then the asphalt from the shingle oozes out through this bruised area, creating spots on the roof, usually within a year. But the real damage is that the substrate of the shingle is compressed and the life expectancy is greatly reduced due to the concentrated compression of the substrate, the loss of the ashphalt, and the thinner protective stone covering.

Residential steel roofing is a different profile than ag steel, and is applied differently than ag steel. The profile and application technique lessen the chances of hail damage.

When my 30 year shingles are worn out (not too distant future), the new roof is going to be steel.
