North Dakota | I am and avid reader of World War II history, and have read so many books I wish I could remember where. Port Chicago munitions explosion killed over 350 in one place and day in 1944. When you think about the production of munitions, shipyards, increased oil and coal production to support effort, aviation production, land based vehicle production, etc. it's not hard to fathom. Especially the hand labor involved building vary large equipment in the very, very short time frame needed. They worked as hard and fast as possible, 24 hours a day. Corners were cut and safety was non-existent to provide the materials necessary to fight a two front war in Pacific and Atlantic Theaters. | |
