...if you get the opportunity, you'll notice that the wheat has put roots through the tile right into the water. Little strings of roots floating along until the wheat dies. That will be 3'deep a lot of places. Wheat grown in Kansas doesn't always have lots of water...it sends roots to seek it out. It roots pretty well when it has to.
