It do to the mixing of the subsoil and topsoil. You have better water infiltration over the trench line. I run a trenching business for a living. When I start a projects I always submit a one call dig request and check out satellite photo to see if and where there may be existing waterlines, buried power cables, and terrace tile. and you can see them very plainly. From my experience the crops are away better looking and yields better over the trench line. In the brought of 2012 and 13 in here in central MO I could tell where oil pipeline and water line installed due to greener crops over the lines. It pretty cool what you can see if you know what to look for.
