Dan,

We took PP last year after wheat instead of planting double crop beans as it was getting well after the 4th of July. Did some tiling and applied some poultry manure on some of the acres then ran a Great Plains turbo chopper, applied cover crop using air flow and potash and Pell lime as carrier probably about August 10-15th. Then ran turbo chopper again shallow.

We used a mix of sprig oats, crimson clover and tillage radishes from Soil First. About 100 acres of it we applied the same as above plus berseem clover and peas. Was trying to introduce the legumes so would be better suited to plant corn in spring. Timing to rain was good and was an awesome lush cover crop that grew until it finally got cold in January to freeze out the oats and radishes (which caused quite a smell). The Crimson Clover took of this spring and was past full bloom when we finally got it planted to corn. So far have been pleased with corn crop in those areas.

Probably had $35\acre in seed\application. Do have some check strips in with different NH 3 rates to review after harvest in fall. I don't fault you for doing PP as it is a great option to bring fertility and or drainage to where they should be, cover crops will then protect and preserve these areas.
