Not land but years ago a friend of mine and I showed up at an auction a 100 miles from home. Turned out both interested in same piece. We each wrote down our top bid and handed it to the other. Deal was whoever had top number could bid. It was me. Other deal was if top number (me) got it for less than my number I owed he and his wife a pricey night out. We ended up shaking for coffee and pie as somebody else blew past my bid.
