To make a long story as short as possible, my wife is bone on bone in both knees, on the outsides of the joint. She started getting "knock-knees", and was in pain all the time: knees, ankles, hips, back. Family doctor referred her to Mayo for knee replacement.
Surgeon said no-go on replacement, as she was too young (58) to do it now. Wanted her to try braces and intense physical therapy for a few years first.
Went from Mayo directly to prosthetic clinic. They fitted her with (sorta like carbon fiber material) braces that wrap around the calf and thigh, hinged at knee, held on with velcro straps (NOT the Forrest Gump type). They put "negative pressure" on the calves and lower thighs, relieving the pressure on the outsides of her knees. Instant relief.
That was in March, and she has no more pain from knees being bone on bone. The braces fit under her jeans (not invisible, but not obvious) and her skirts for work cover them.
Night and day difference since she got the braces.
She'll eventually have to have them replaced, according to surgeon, but she's good for now.
Just saying that it might be something to look into. | |
