Garrett County, MD | Totally different area than you but... we have found that the drilled rye will show up much earlier than the broadcast, as you would expect. But the broadcast will come in the spring so don't be discouraged. Usually it really looks nice in the spring by about the time we kill it. Not much help if you wanted winter erosion control. But it usually comes.
For what it is worth we stopped using cover crop because here by the time we get our crops off it is usually too late to get any fall growth, plus we have seen tremendous slug pressure on our seedlings after planting the next spring, both corn and beans. I think planting into it green, then killing it might help that from what i have read, but not sure that is feasible on any amount of commercial acreage. | |
