Columbia Basin, Ephrata, WA
Topsoil is most important for production.

A lot of our fields are pretty much without productive subsoil. The subsoil is a clean gravel/rock mix that has nothing to offer plants. To grow anything in our subsoil would pretty well be hydroponic production. With a little layer of topsoil over it and irrigation, we have a shot at 300 bushel corn.
