Saskatchewan, big whitetail country!!! | Ironically, I think the subsoil is actually more important. As I look at some of the crops on here in pictures, and see the color ( nearly white), and structure ( beaten to death), of the soil lots of good looking crops seem to be grown in, I recognize that the topsoil matters less than I used to think. And on my own farm, some of my ugly topsoil, still grows great crops. Yes, rich topsoil has more nutrient status, more forgiving structure, etc., but the subsoil seems to be what has the final say.
I will also throw out there the no till thing. No till on my farm has equalized the soils, because of structure challenges the poor ones used to have, but are no longer there. No till has healed my poor topsoil areas... |
